ABOUT THE COLLECTION
In her latest series of paintings, Yulan divorces the use of traditional calligraphy marks to convey the message of the written word and instead explores the link of free space, and otherworldly interconnectivity.
Joanne Yulan Jong is the Scottish born contemporary artist of South African and Chinese ancestry. She studied at Edinburgh College of Art then moved to London to complete an MA degree at the Royal College of Art. She then worked between Milan and London, as a fashion designer.
Her design work has always been informed by her eye for simple, elegant forms and a restricted palette of colours and so too her artworks. Her passion for drawing, often with inks and charcoals, has led her back to creating art in its purest form - painting. Her paintings and drawings reflect her Chinese heritage and she identifies herself, as an artist, using her Chinese name, Yulan.
“My abstract paintings are inspired by calligraphy. My process is to dissect words, and their various elements, explore the study of positive and negative spaces and reconstruct them as new works. By removing the need for symbols to convey a message, the work then begins to explore free space, time, movement and interconnectivity"
